Mary (Wada) Maruyama was born June 25, 1925 in Sumner, Washington. Like the vast majority of the Japanese Americans in Chicago, she settled here after release from the internment camps. Mary was one of the founding members of the Buddhist Temple of Chicago.
She married George Maruyama on May 8th, 1949 in a ceremony held at the Buddhist Temple of Chicago.
George and Mary were devoted to the temple and were central to its social and cultural life. She was a leader in the Boy and Girl Scouts programs and youth programs and was always helping out in the BTC festivals: Bon Odori, Mochitsuki, Natsumatsuri, among others.
Mary passed away on April 4, 2016 at the home of her daughter in Chicago.
